JUETENG FREE PANGASINAN”

LINGAYEN— NO kidding!

This sums up the reaction of Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Emeritus Oscar Cruz and other church leaders in the province who appeared amused as they laughed at the statements of Sr. Supt. Mariano Luis Verzosa, officer-in-charge police provincial director, that Pangasinan is now jueteng-free.

It’s not because the clergy thinks it’s funny. It’s because they think its baloney.

Kawawa naman ang mama!” said Cruz, founding chairman of the Krusada ng Bayan Laban sa Jueteng.

Cruz’s colleagues in the Catholic ministry said Verzosa has practically become a “laughing stock” in the province, as everyone is aware that bet collection for the illegal numbers game takes place “right and left”.

In random checks with residents in some barangays in Dagupan by The PUNCH, jueteng collectors are reportedly busy every day collecting bets and announcing winning combinations.

Verzosa earlier told local media that there is no more jueteng in Pangasinan and that what is left is jai- alai, which has permit to operate from local government units.

Cruz, who earlier told off Verzosa “tell that to the Martians”, said it is public knowledge and it has been reported by elements of the Department of Interior and Local Governments that conducted raids that the jai-lai has been a front for jueteng.

Verzosa admitted that jail-alai operates like jueteng, but said the police cannot do anything to stop it as their hands are tied because of a restraining order issued by the Court of Appeals.
