Pangasinan-Guam to forge sisterhood
LINGAYEN—Pangasinan is forging a sisterhood agreement with Guam to foster closer economic and cultural ties.
Governor Amado Espino Jr. is leading a provincial government team to Guam on September 21 to sign the tie-up.
Espino said the sisterhood will build “closer ties in terms of business development, strong economic relationship, and closer cultural experiences and exchanges with Guam.”
This means, among other things, that skilled workers from Pangasinan may be given priority employment opportunities, particularly in the military development in Guam
The sisterhood agreement was initiated through Provincial Resolution No. 394-2011 authored by Vice Governor Ferdinand Calimlim titled “Declaring the intent to establish a sisterhood relationship and goodwill between the people of Guam and the United States of America and the people of the Province of Pangasinan of the Republic of the Philippines”, which was approved by the board November 3, 2011.
“The sisterhood relationship and goodwill will contribute to a mutual and stronger diplomatic relations, deeper cross-cultural understanding and worldwide cooperation toward sustainable economic and community development between the people of the two regions,” the resolution reads.
In October last year, Guam Senators Judith Guthertz and Rory Respicio and officials of the Federation of Pangasinenses in Guam spearheaded by retired Major Vic Rivo visited the province during a special session of the provincial board to express their interest to establish sisterhood with the province.– Johanne R.
