“Gulayan sa Paaralan” launched in Dagupan
THE Search for Best Implementer in the “Gulayan sa Barangay” and a 120-day supplementary feeding program for 300 severely malnourished pupils from 10 pilot schools in Dagupan and were launched Wednesday by Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez and the City Schools Division at Pogo-Lasip Elementary School.
The twin programs, complementary and both intended to boost nutrition among pupils, were endorsed by City Schools Superintendent Alma Ruby Torio.
The CSI Group Companies distributed vegetables to be planted by every school under the Search for Best Implementer in the “Gulayan sa Paaralan” this year.
Dr. Diosdado Cayabyab, program supervisor of the City Schools Division, said products from the “Gulayan sa Paaralan” will form part of the ingredients of the nutritious food to be fed to the severely malnourished children under the 120-supplementary program.
Harvesting of vegetables starts in two months and will reach its peak by December at which time the Best Implementing schools will receive awards.
For the feeding program, Fernandez tapped the corporate resources of multinational firm Unilever and its partner Kabisig at Kalahi, a non-government organization (NGO), as well as Mead Johnson and Company.
This is the second year that the two companies and the NGO are collaborating with Fernandez’ CSI Group of Companies in bankrolling a supplementary feeding program for children in Dagupan.
Unilever is contributing P60,000 per school, which is expected to be matched by the CSI Group of Companies, while Mead Johnson will supply the milk for the children at one glass each a day over the 120-day period.
The 10 pilot areas are Pogo-Lasip Elementary, Lasip Grande Elementary School, Salisay Elementary School, Tambac Elementary School, Caranglaan Elementary School, Juan P. Guadiz Elementary School, Bolosan Elementary School, Mangin-Tebeng Elementary School, Pascuala Villamil Elementary School and Victoria Zarate Elementary School.
Cayabyab said the beneficiaries are severely malnourished pupils in preparatory school and in Grades I, II and III.
The teachers and parents will cook the food based on the menu prepared by Kabisig and approved by the City Nutrition Office headed by Lea Aquino.
