Two nabbed for illegal possession of firearms

IT WAS definitely one situation that two government employees did not expect after playing Good Samaritan.

Two administrative aides of the Municipal Election Office of Calasiao town were arrested by the police for illegal possession of firearms shortly after bringing a victim of a vehicular accident at the Specialist Group Hospital Tuesday night.

While a staff nurse was attending to the victim, she noticed that one of the two men had a handgun tucked in his waist so she alerted the security guard to call the police.

When frisked by lawmen, Richard Lopez, 23, was found to be carrying a Norinco Cal. 45 pistol with 12 live ammunition. The other firearm, an Armscor Cal. 45 pistol, was taken from the compartment of the motorcycle of his companion, Louie Oriel, 26.

The firearm found in the possession of Lopez was licensed but it was in the name of Jeremias Mensias, municipal election officer of Calasiao.

Mensias presented the license to the arresting policemen led by Chief Inspector Rizalde Dalope but could not show his permit to carry the same outside of his residence.

Mensias also failed to explain why his firearm was being held by Lopez.

The other firearm found in the compartment of Oriel’s motorcycle was unlicensed.

Both Lopez and Oriel are employees of the Calasiao Municipal Government but assigned as administrative aides of the Municipal Election Office.

The two are now facing separate cases of illegal possession of firearms punishable under Republic Act No. 8294.
