SAN CARLOS CITY – While some parts of Dagupan City complain of incessant flooding the past weeks, San Carlos boasts the city has been flood- free, thanks to its project “Six-in- One”.

Mayor Jolly Resuello said the project being undertaken by the city government along the Rio Laguna de Vega in barangay Lilimasan this city has six components, namely: farm-to-market road, irrigation, livelihood, filling materials, flood control and housing.

Resuello said the dredging equipment of the city government has dredged about 80 to 100 meters wide along the Lilimasan River and the soil dredged was used for road projects and as filling materials for low-lying areas.

The channels have been created to also direct excess water into irrigation for farmlands and to avert flooding in the barangay and other low-lying areas so a housing project can be implemented in the area, Resuello said.

The planned housing component, he said, can either be funded by the national government or by a private company.

According to the city mayor, since the heavy equipment was purchased in 1999, it has    saved the city coffers from P200 million to P300 million worth of contracts.

He estimates that some 200 to 300 hectares have been dredged along the river in barangays Matagdem, Nelintap, Manzon, Tarece and Ano and also along barangays Pagal, Cacaritan, Palaming, Pangpang, Calomboyan and rivers leading to Binmaley-Lingayen areas.

He advised other flood-prone towns to resort to dredging to prevent or minimize flooding. – EVA
