Idle moms turned productive bag-makers
BINMALEY–Mothers in several barangays here who wait idly under the trees or along the corridors while their children are in school have been given something more productive to do with their time.
Vice Mayor Pete Merrera has introduced the Negosyo Laban sa Kahirapan livelihood project where the moms are taught to make fashionable bags made from recycled plastic straws.
A high school student, Carlo Mendoza, teaches the mothers on how to make the bags from straws purchased by Merrera.
Merrera said he is now coordinating with the Department of Labor and Employment for funding support as the finished products have proven to be saleable.
The mothers earn from their sale.
The project, started about three months ago, has helped women in at least seven barangays, namely: Basing, Naguilayan, Biec, Caloocan Sur, Caloocan Norte, Malindong and Poblacion.—Eva Visperas
