LNU Dukes break UPang winning margin record

By Jesus Garcia Jr.

THREE days after the defending champion Upang Webczars established the biggest winning margin record (105 points) in the history of Pangasinan colleges and universities basketball tilts, the Lyceum Northwestern University Dukes surpassed what the former accomplished against the same opponent.

And they did it with much to spare demolishing the puerile PRISAA Pangasinan 1 quintet, 133-14, an incredible 119 points margin of victory and a new record of the annual league.

The title-contender Dukes, now under the tutelage of former varsity player Jomo Evangelista, started the play last Thursday at the Dagupan People’s Astrodome, with ferocious bombs from inside and outside led by its veterans Lionel Razon and Michael Indoy.

Applying suffocating traps mixed with fast breaks and domination of the boards, the Dukes displayed no compassion against their opponents up to the final buzzer to register their second win sans loss.

Their lopsided victory could be a strong message to the other title-contenders, particularly to the Webczars and to the University of Luzon Golden Tigers.

In the first game, the much-improved PIMSAT Mariners had a hard time outmaneuvering the Pangasinan State University five and yielded 34-32 first quarter score.

Sensing that a major upset and a humiliation was in the making, the sharpened and determined Mariners employed a run-and-gun game on the second half which rattled their less cohesive rivals and earned a 70-57 score of victory.

In the main event, as expected-title favorite Golden Tigers lambasted the visiting Lyceum Northwestern Florencia T. Duque quintet from Urdaneta City, 115-29, to mark their second victory without defeat. The Urdanetians suffered their second debacle without a win.

Skirmishes resume tomorrow afternoon at the same venue the Dagupan People’s Astrodome.

Earlier, the University of Pangasinan Webczars set out to rip record where it can when I given a chance.

They gave Region 1 the best finish ever when they represented the region in this year’s PRISAA (Private Schools Athletic Association) National Games by landing fourth out of 15 regions.

The 2005 Pangasinan colleges and universities champion Webczars has eight of 15 players and steered by Angel Gumarang, assisted by Jay Ronquillo and George Ceralde.

Last Monday, the second day of hostilities of this year’s PRISAA Pangasinan-Dagupan City Inter-Collegiate Basketball   Invitational Championship held at Dagupan People’s Astrodome, the Webczars established another record by clobbering their foes with an early onslaught scoring 62-9 in the first two quarters; and still not content with playing like a runaway train on the third canto, blanking their rivals with an amazing  93-9 output, pulled off   the league’s most lopsided win 121-16 rout of the lowly rated PRISAA Pangasinan 1 squad.

Bugallon son Bryan Santillan scored a game high 27 points. Cresencio Maminta and Lennel Manalo had 18 points apiece. Seldom-used Joel abalos contributed 17. Wily guard Albert Carcha had 15.

The Webczars also known as the Pitaki Boyz supported by Jazy Sportswear faces another pallid squad, the Pangasinan State University, on August 14 still at the Dagupan People’s Astrodome.

The well-trained Webczars managed by Dominador Rayos and chaired by Dr. Catalino Rivera has its key players gone but with the same mentors.

In the second game, the PAMMA Seafarers drubbed the freshmen LNU Florencia T. Duque quintet, 96-50, while the AIE-Commerce Eagles scored their first win after two outings trouncing the winless Colegio de Dagupan Voltz, 79-65 held at Dagupan People’s Astrodome.
