All mega projects assured of completion
ALL ongoing “mega projects” in Pangasinan will continue and be completed even after a new President takes over this year, assured the Regional Development Council (RDC).
Director Leonardo Quitos, RDC vice chairman, said the projects include the Agno River Integrated Irrigation Project (ARIIP), the Sual Seaport Development Project, and the Alaminos Airport, all of which have already been started.
“The RDC will continue to lobby for the immediate and even early completion of these strategic projects because the province and the region will surely benefit from them,” Quitos said.
In a talk to newsmen shortly after a road show on the Post-Disaster Rehabilitation and Reconstruction at Lenox Hotel in Dagupan City on Wednesday, Quitos also said that the construction of the Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (TPLex), which is under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) scheme by a consortium led by San Miguel Corporation, will be carried out even after a change in government leadership. The ARIIP has been under construction for the past two years and the Re-Regulating Pond component has just recently been started.
The Alaminos Domestic Airport and the Sual Seaport Development Project, both in the initial stages of development, are part of the Department of Transportation and Communication’s program for a medium-term period.
At the same time, Quitos said he has transmitted the request of the RDC seeking the restoration of the Agno River Flood Control Dike to its original condition after it was breached by a big flood in October last year.
He said the part of the dike that was restored by the Department of Public Works and Highways protecting the southern part of Pangasinan and 14 other sites was just an earth dike which may not be strong enough to withstand another La Niña episode during which the San Roque Multi-Purpose Dam may be forced to release excess water.
It was the breach of the dike in Tumana, Rosales that caused flood and rendered the newly-built SM City Rosales closed for months.—LM
