Cattle rustlers back in San Carlos
SAN CARLOS CITY—A year after the provincial police director wrote the suspected cattle rustlers warning of dire consequences if they did not desist from operating in the province, the suspects are back in the city with a vengeance.
Mayor Julier Resuello said reports from the 86 barangays here indicate cattle rustling is again on the rise.
The mayor suspects that the cattle rustles are taking advantage of the recall of shotguns issued to barangay chairmen in accordance with the nationwide gun ban for the May elections.
After Sr. Supt. Percival Barba, police provincial director, wrote those personal letters, cattle rustling activities were reportedly curbed.
“Village officials cannot do anything because they again fear for their lives. They only have patrol sticks while on duty,” he said.
Resuello said he has asked Gov. Amado Espino Jr. to help draw up a plan to address the problem.
He said the cattle thieves carry firearms and highly mobile when they take away the farm animals found along the highway and in the fields.
“They just cut the ropes and quickly cart them away,” he said.
The mayor said the city does not have enough policemen to help secure the barangays.
He lamented that the organized community alert systems that were installed are no longer enough to ward off the cattle rustlers. #
