Dagupan City bets to sign peace pact

CANDIDATES in Dagupan City for the May 10 election will sign a peace covenant on Monday, March 8, after a holy mass at the St. John Metropolitan Cathedral at 9:00 a.m.

City Election Officer Remarque Ravanzo said the signing of a peace covenant among candidates was initiated by city police chief Supt. Mariano Luis Verzosa.

Dagupan has been included in Comelec’s and the police’s watch list as potential ‘hot spot’ areas during the campaign and election period and but Ravanzo stressed that the peace covenant signing is not an offshoot of the city’s inclusion.

He cited peace covenants signed in the past without Dagupan being tagged as a potential election hotspot.

Ravanzo also said both he and the police chief do not agree with Dagupan’s inclusion in this election’s watch list, a recommendation put forward from offices in Metro Manila based on the perceived “intense political rivalry” in the city.

While Ravanzo and Verzosa have agreed to recommend the exclusion of Dagupan in the watch list, the positive aspect of the inclusion is the augmentation of more police personnel in the city during the polls.

Expected to attend the signing are Chief Superintendent Constante Azares Jr., PNP regional director, and Sr. Supt. Percival Barba, PNP provincial director.—LM
