1st Dagupan tourism congress set Sept. 14-16
THE 2012 Hospitality and Tourism Opportunities Congress, the first for Dagupan City, is set September 14-16.
A series of workshops by industry leaders and other activities are lined up for the three-day event at the People’s Astrodome centering on the theme “Creating Opportunities, Building Lasting Capabilities”.
Expected at the opening are Mayor Benjamin S. Lim, Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr. and Commission on Higher Education-Region 1 Director Caridad Abuan with Philippine National Red Cross chair and former Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Richard Gordon to present the theme.
Speakers on the first day are University of the Philippines (UP)-Diliman Prof. Ivan Henares of the travelogue blog Ivan About Town, to discuss on travel and food tourism, and Charie Villa of ABS-CBN’s Choose Philippines on social media use to promote tourism development.
DOT-Region 1 Director Martin Valera will open the second day, followed by Senator Pia Cayetano’s lecture on the role of micro, small and medium entrepreneurs in tourism.
Maximo “Beep” Tan of the city’s Community Development Office will share his experiences on event management while UP Los Baños Prof. Robby Cereno will focus on ecotourism.
Final day clinic facilitators are Oceana Gold Philippines on ethics and social responsibility, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority-Pangasinan on hospitality human resources trends and Belo Medical Group on medical and wellness tourism.
Capping the congress will be a skills competition and fellowship among tourism and hospitality students in the province.
Rose Teng-Mejia, city tourism officer, said the congress was organized to promote a culture of tourism among students, the conference’s main clientele, and local industry players.
The event is organized by City Tourism Office, Harlijk Productions and University of Luzon-Students in Free Enterprise. (CIO)
