THE ELECTION-PROC SCENARIO

JDV reiterates call for summit

FOURTH District Rep. Jose de Venecia Jr. has reiterated his call for the holding of a national summit of political parties to discuss and agree on a common plan of action in case the first electronic election fails and no winner is proclaimed on time.

De Venecia, who is rumored to have kissed and made up with his former-ally-turned-foe President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, has proposed that the President call the summit by April or earlier to forestall the possibility of a “no election and no proclamation scenario”.

“If you look at the newspapers and listen to radio commentaries, there seems to be clear and imminent danger,” De Venecia said, pointing out that the continuous hacking of government websites is quite worrisome.

“The best way to avoid such dangerous scenarios is to get all the political parties together and agree on which common action can be taken with the consent of all,” he told newsmen in an interview at his residence on February 14.

He initially proposes that the Senate should select a Senate President from among those who will continue to be in office beyond June 30 this year, who can then temporarily take the reins of the Presidency.

He pointed out that the terms of office of President Arroyo, Vice President Noli de Castro, Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile and House Speaker Prospero Nograles are all expiring on June 30.

De Venecia said this move is necessary to ensure that there will be a civil leader who will head the government instead of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, as protector of the people, taking over the leadership of the nation until such time that the duly elected President is proclaimed by both houses of Congress and of the Senate.–LM
