Kapitan detains Red Cross volunteers
THE provincial office of Red Cross in Pangasinan is set to take legal action against the barangay kapitan of Barangay Diket in Umingan for alleged illegal detention of six Red Cross volunteers last Thursday.
Floramae Magalong, Red Cross provincial officer, said she will relay this “emotionally stressful” incident to their legal office for proper action against the barangay chairman identified only as Falcon who locked up six Red Cross Pangasinan volunteers inside a room in the barangay hall for almost an hour.
Magalong said the volunteers, one male and five females, were held after some angry residents who were not listed failed to receive the sanitary and hygiene kits distributed by the group.
“They were not allowed to leave the room. What’s so disturbing here was the emotional stress they went through,” Magalong said.
One of the volunteers called Magalong who then sought assistance from the police and a staff of the municipal government.
“I will definitely not take this sitting down. He should respect them because they do voluntary service,” she said.
The hygiene kit distribution is part of the ongoing program of the Red Cross to help people in communities who were affected by Typhoon Pepeng in October last year
Magalong said after this incident, RC will no longer continue with the second phase of the program in the barangay.
She said the 209 recipients of their program in Diket underwent assessment and proper process before they were given assistance.#
