NBI launches ‘barangay’ project

THE National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) office in Pangasinan is linking up with barangay leaders to improve crime prevention and solution through intelligence gathering on the ground.

Lawyer Rogelio Mamauag, NBI chief in Dagupan, said the “NBI sa Barangay” project was launched January 27 in a gathering attended by 73 barangay chairmen from Malasiqui town.

Mamauag said the project encourages residents to relay information directly to him by sending a text message to mobile number 09063524000.

“Absolutely, there will be no leak of confidential information given me. We can’t betray the people’s trust,” said Mamauag.

But he clarified that any information they receive relating to a crime will have to be validated by the bureau.

Mamauag also stressed that the project is not intended to compete with the Philippine National Police, but merely to make people aware that they can share information with the NBI as well.

The program aims to cover all the 44 towns and four cities in Pangasinan in collaboration with the Liga ng mga Barangay.

The project may later on include the processing of NBI clearances on site when bureau representatives visit the towns and cities.#
