DON’T be eating kulot seaweed from Bolinao for now.

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) regional director has issued an advisory prohibiting the collection, selling, and eating of seaweeds from the coastal town of Bolinao.

The seaweed is suspected to be the cause of death of two people and the hospitalization of four others.

BFAR Regional Director Nestor Domenden sent a team Tuesday day to gather samples of the seaweeds along Patar in Bolinao for laboratory testing.

Father and son Rey and German Honrada, aged 74 and 34, respectively, died last week after allegedly eating the seaweeds, which was also consumed by four other people who later got sick and brought to the hospital.

Similar poisoning incidents happened three years ago, according to Domenden, and they will examine if the same fur-like organism that attaches itself to the seaweeds has recurred.

The samples will be first sent to the BFAR central office laboratory and if further tests are necessary, to Japan or the United States of America.

Domenden said it may take at least a month before the results could be finalized.#
