Disaster-preparedness ‘olympics’ winners bared

The one-day academic “Olympics” with the theme “Itaguyod ang Kaunlaran, Kalamidad ay Paghandaan’ staged at the Division Training Center on July 17 drew enthusiastic participation from the city’s schools and colleges and professional artists.

The competition, one of the activities held in observance of the National Disaster Consciousness Month, was staged for oratory, essay, and poster design and sloganeering.

The winners in the oratorical contest are Jo Deanne Gravidez (Archdiocese School of San Fabian), 1st place; Justine Marie Arenas (Dominican School) 2nd place; and Benson Abulencia (St. Michael the Archangel) and Manilyn Aquino (La Sallete High School) 3rd place.

The best in the essay writing contest on the sub theme “Disaster  Preparedness is  Everybody’s Business,” were  Kathrin Blake Samson (Mother Goose Special School System Inc.) 1st place; Michelle Carag (Dominican) and Kristine Joelle Pantig (MGSSSI) 2nd place; and  Ranjyliana Manaois (UPANG) and Ma. Christina Santillan (DCNHS) 3rd place.

Adjudged winners for their poster designs (professional level) were: 1st place – Patrick Bacolor (Dagupan Artists’ Circle); 2nd place – Richard Honrado (LNU faculty member); and Edmundo Calimlim (Dagupan Artists’ Circle). In the college level, winners were: 1st place – Julius Javier (UPANG); 2nd place – Jonathan Soriano (PIMSAT); and Andrew Nicholas Cacatian (LNU).    

For the slogans, the entry of Bonuan Boquig National High School was adjudged the winner, which read: “Paghandaan ang pagdating ng kalamidad, ito ang susi sa maunlad na komunidad.” The entry of St. John Cathedral School won second while the College of St. Michael the Archangel made it to the third place. 

Winners bagged P1,000, P800, and P500 plus medals and certificates for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes, respectively, for each category.

The competition was jointly sponsored by the Dagupan City Disaster Coordinating Council (CDCC), Department of Education, and Center for Disaster Preparedness (CDP), Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC), and United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Dagupan Bangus Jaycees.
