Two men held, charged in Kapitan’s slay
JACINTO—Two suspects have been charged for the murder of the barangay chairman of Awai here midnight of December 28.
Gregorio Andaya, Awai’s kapitan who is also a former army master sergeant, was shot dead in the head and limbs.
The suspects, Alvin Francis Sanchez, a businessman, and his cousin Wilfred Ponce, have been charged with homicide.
The incident happened between 11:00 to 12:00 midnight along the main road in Barangay Awai, while the village was celebrating a Christmas Party.
Investigators found a caliber 9 mm. pistol believed to be owned by Andaya and a Cal. 45 pistol believed to be owned by Sanchez at the crime scene. Both guns were verified as licensed.
Anadaya and Sanchez are said to have shot at each other after an altercation when barangay tanods intercepted Sanchez and Ponce on board a motorcycle without the headlight on at about midnight.
Witnesses said the barangay tanods called Andaya when Sanchez became unruly after they were apprehended. A heated argument transpired between Sanchez and Andaya, which led to the shooting.
Sanchez was wounded and rushed to the Dagupan Medical Centrum in Dagupan City where he was treated.
Ponce was arrested on the spot and turned over to the responding policemen while Sanchez was placed under guard at the hospital.—LM
