Police, AFP Comelec join forces for peaceful election
STA. BARBARA– Security control centers in several provinces will be established by the Philippine National Police (PNP), in collaboration with the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to monitor potential and preempt election-related violence for the duration of the campaign period until the 2010 polls.
PNP Chief Director General Jesus Verzosa, speaking to local newsmen Tuesday, said the areas have been determined based on reported incidents of violence in 2004 and 2007 elections.
The nine provinces that will have these special security centers are: Abra, Nueva Ecija, Masbate, Maguindanao, Sulu, Lanao del Sur, Lanao del Norte, Basilan and Samar.
In Pangasinan, Verzosa, who hails from Dasol, said the towns of San Carlos City and Agno, where two mayors were killed in election-related crimes in the 2007 election, will be in the list of closely-watched areas.
Verzosa also said candidates who feel that they are under threat for election-related violence can request from them additional security.
Each request will be evaluated jointly by the police and the Comelec.#
