Rosales bags ‘Likas Yaman’ Award
SAN FERNANDO CITY – The municipality of Rosales was recently adjudged the “Most Outstanding Local Government Unit in Eco-Tourism Promotion and Environmental Protection” in the Ilocos region.
The town of Rosales, headed by Mayor Ricardo Revita, was cited for implementing nature conservation programs, eco-tourism promotion and strictly enforcing environment and natural resources laws, thereby creating an impact which catalyzed a broad-based local movement towards sustainable development.
The citation was in connection with the yearly Likas Yaman Award for Environmental Excellence given to individuals and institutions as external partners of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
All the awardees were honored during the program celebrating the Environment Month Celebration held at the Department of Budget and Management Conference Hall here last June 28.
The individual awardees from Pangasinan are Judge Vicente Hidalgo of Umingan who was adjudged as “Most Outstanding Individual Initiative in Ecological Enhancement and Development; and Engr. Daniel Fabiana of Labrador for having the “Best Upland Development Project”.
According to DENR Executive Director Victor Ancheta, Judge Hidalgo was cited for developing a non-productive pastureland in his town into a model agro-forestry plantation that now serves as show window for sustainable upland resources development and utilization.
Fabiana was cited for successfully developing a 10-hectare forest plantation that contributed to the enhancement and restoration of forest ecosystem and resources in Central Pangasinan.
The other institutional awardees from Pangasinan are the University of the Philippines” Social Action and Research for Dervelopment Foundation, Inc. in Anda, “Most Outstanding NGO Partner”; and the Macalaeeng Samahan ng mga Mangingisda, also in Anda, “Most Outstanding Community-Based Coastal Environment Project”.
Other awardees are Celso Jucutan of San Fernando City, La Union, Most Outstanding Youth Leader in Environment”; Dr. Medard Sahagun of Dingras, Ilocos Norte, “Most Outstanding Individual Initiative in Environmental Management and Protection”; Municipality of Pinili, Ilocos Norte, “Most Outstanding LGU in Social Equity Promotion and Land Management,” and the municipality of Lidlidda, Ilocos Sur, “Best LGU-Initiated Environment Project”.
