Four mayoralty bets unopposed
WHILE the country faces a record number of presidential aspirants in the May 2010 elections, some towns in Pangasinan have top position candidates who are unopposed.
Lawyer Reddy Balarbar, provincial election supervisor, told The PUNCH that these unopposed candidates are practically assured of victory.
They are: re-electionists Mayor Vivien Villar and Vice Mayor Timoteo “Dick” Villar III in Sto. Tomas who are running under the Biskeg na Pangasinan party; Mayor Rodrigo Orduña and Vice Mayor Bernabe de Vera in Bugallon under Lakas- Kampi-CMD, and Mayor Amado Espino III, son of incumbent Gov. Amado Espino Jr., in Bautista under Lakas-Kampi-CMD-Biskeg.
In Mapandan, first-time mayoral candidate Maximo Calimlim Jr., a re tired police general, running under Lakas-Kampi-CMD-Biskeg, and Vice Mayor Asuncion Calimlim, under Nationalist People’s Coalition-Biskeg, are gunning for re-election without opposition.
In Mangatarem, Cristina Punzal Cruz is unopposed as vice mayoralty candidate in Mangatarem under the Partido ng Masang Pilipino.
Balarbar said that in these four towns where there are unopposed mayors, the vote will have a crucial impact in the race for the provincial governor position.
He noted that aside from Mayor Espino being the son of the incumbent who is also running for re-election, Orduña is also a close ally of the governor while Calimlim is the uncle of incumbent Mayor Jose Ferdinand Calimlim Jr. who is the running mate of the governor.#
