Anti-Violence against Women’s Day set Nov. 25
NOVEMBER 25 has been declared as National Day of Awareness on Violence Against Women.
Senator Pia Cayetano, chair of the senate committee on social justice and author of the Magna Carta of Women (Republic Act 9710), said while this is a special day of observance, “everyday should be a day to end violence on women and children”.
Speaking in a forum on Anti-Violence Against Women held at CSI the City Mall in Dagupan on Thursday, Cayetano urged women to report to the police all acts of violence committed against them so the perpetrators can be arrested and charged.
Cayetano discussed provisions of Republic Act 262, which punishes acts of violence committed against women and their children and allows any citizen who has personal knowledge of the incident to pursue the case if the victim refuses or unable to do so.
The forum was organized by Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez and Councilor Farah Decano, chair of the city council’s committee on women and children’s welfare.
Decano pointed out that the city police have a women and children’s welfare desk that specifically handles cases on violence against women and children.
Those who attended the forum were day care center workers, lady barangay officials, Barangay Health Workers and Barangay Service Point Officers from the 31 barangays of the city.
The punishable acts, according to the Senator, include physical violence, sexual violence, psychological violence and economic abuse or acts that make a woman financially dependent on the offender.—LM
