POLITICAL POT HEATS UP

LINGAYEN—For Second District Congressman Victor Agbayani, the die is cast in his bid to return to his old post as governor of Pangasinan.

Agbayani announced on Wednesday that he has no other plan in the May 2010 election but to run for governor, which he held for three straight terms from 1998 to 2007.

“I will run for governor again in the May 2010 election and I hope that the people and God will help me through,” said Agbayani.

He said he wants to return to his old post to revive the good programs he started which have been discontinued by the present administration, such as the construction of roads and bridges, irrigation and school buildings, family planning, and health, among others.

“They were discontinued because they said these were my programs and projects, but which is wrong. They could have at least just changed their names, not stopped these,” he said.

CARTOONnews091108Agbayani will be up against the incumbent, Gov. Amado Espino Jr., who will seek a re-election under the banner of the administration party. He is currently the provincial chairman of the merged Lakas-Kampi-CMD party.

Both candidates have yet to announce their respective running mates but Agbayani strongly hinted that he and former three-term Vice Governor Oscar Lambino will likely be the team.

Espino, on the other hand, has a choice between Mapandan Mayor Ferdinand Calimlim and Sixth District Board Member Alfonso Bince Jr., among others.

Agbayani and Lambino, both co-chairmen in the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats, parted ways in the 2007 polls when the former fielded his wife Jamie, a doctor, to run for governor, while Lambino also ran for the same post.

Mrs. Agbayani and Lambino were beaten by Espino, who was then 2nd District Representative.

“Oscar might have been an opponent (of his wife), but we were never enemies. So, we are in good terms and it is possible that we can again join together as a team,” Agbayani said.

Both Agbayani and Lambino have just joined the Liberal Party.  Agbayani also said he is now consulting political leaders on their choice as LP’s candidate as congressional representative in the 2nd District.—LM
