THE Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) has admitted that the septic tank of the city jail is defective, causing its surface water to flow to the Lingayen Gulf.

Jail Warden Chief Insp. Florante Nisperos said he will prioritize the repair of the defective septic tank  which had beed  tagged by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) as one of the sources of pollution of the Lingayen Gulf.

Based on analysis being conducted by the BFAR regularly, the beach area at the back of the city jail is high in coliform level and is neither fit for swimming nor fishing.

Nisperos confessed his office is unable to repair the facility for lack of funds so he will ask for help from the BJMP regional office and   Mayor Benjamin Lim.

Recently designated as city warden, Nisperos lamented that the repair of the defective septic tank was not given any attention by previous jail managements.

“We will do our best to solve the problem as we cannot let the city jail to be the source of pollution for the Lingayen Gulf,” he said.

BFAR has already reported the presence of a high level of coliform bacteria in the water at the back of the city jail but city officials merely ignored it. – APE
