LINGAYEN–The number of fatalities in Pangasinan from the flood spawned by Typhoon “Pepeng” rose to 62 as of 6:00 p.m. on October 22 Thursday as five more bodies were found in flooded Bayambang town where some barangays are still under water.

This was contained in a terminal report of the Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council (PDCC) after monitoring the 34 towns and three cities in the province that were affected.

In Dagupan, five fatalities were reported, but while these were all described as typhoon-related, not one was caused by drowning.

The PDCC report also showed that there were 235,803 families or 1,185,379 persons affected in 947 barangays that were all submerged by floodwater.

Only one of 153 evacuation centers that were opened remained active when report was presented. Located at the covered court in Bayambang, near the town hall, it accommodated 29 families or 125 persons from Barangays Bacnono, Tamaro and others affected by the breach of a concrete dike in their area.

The PDCC said as of October 16, electricity has resumed in all affected towns.

Damage to agriculture was estimated at P4.18 billion in terms of rice, corn, high-value commercial crops, fisheries and livestock.

INFRASTRUCTURE

Seven bridges were damaged, the most serious of which is the Agat Bridge in Sison connecting the provinces of Pangasinan and La Union, as well as the Bued Bridge, also in Sison.

National roads, bridges, irrigation and flood control damages totaled P1.27 billion while, provincial roads, bridges, irrigation and flood control projects incurred total damages of more than P683 million.

Other infrastructure projects and facilities sustained damages worth more than P2 billion.

Meanwhile, the San Roque Dam has already stopped releasing water downstream of the Agno River as of 11:00 a.m. on Thursday.—LM
