URDANETA CITY — Vegetable supply brought to the Bagsakan (wholesale) Market here from regions 1, 2, 3 and the Cordillera has been cut by 40 percent following Typhoon Pepeng.

Mayor Amadeo Perez Jr. said farm produce has become scarce as a result of the devastation of farms and heavy damage suffered by roads and bridges during the Oct. 9 deluge.

“There are still vegetables coming in for trading but the volume has tremendously decreased,” Perez said.

He added that with the low supply, prices should be expected to go up significantly by November at the Bagsakan Market, which operates 24/7.

Meanwhile, the mayor said the Tulungan sa Purok program, which encourages backyard farming and the use of vacant lots within the barangays for vegetable production, is being intensified through the distribution of free seeds.

Perez said the program should contribute to the community’s food supply with the harvest in two months’ time.#
