De Venecia couple kicks off medical drive

REP. Jose de Venecia Jr. and his wife Gina have intensified their anti-leptospirosis and anti-tetanus drive in the 4th District following the exposure of most residents to floodwater after Typhoon Pepeng hit on October 9.

The campaign against the two diseases complements their ongoing relief operations to flood victims in Dagupan, Mangaldan, San Fabian, San Jacinto and Manaoag.

Leptospirosis, which has downed more than 700 residents of Metro Manila who waded in floodwater, is caused by the virus coming from infected urine of rats that may be present in the floodwater. It could be fatal if not immediately treated.

The daily missions are complemented by three mobile health clinics with modern diagnostic facilities and manned by doctors and nurses from rural health units.

Mrs. De Venecia also gave assurances that there are enough medicines available.

“We will intensify our daily medical and dental missions in all the barangays of the Fourth District, especially now that most of our district mates were exposed to the floodwater,” she added.

TREE PLANTING

Meanwhile, Mrs. De Venecia called for the planting of trees in order to slow down global warming.

“Aside from pushing for the repair of washed out flood control dikes, your Kuya Joe and I will move for public support for the planting of one billion trees as trees have the capacity to absorb carbon dioxide, re lease oxygen into the atmosphere, take in excess water in the soil  and prevent erosion,” she said.

The couple met with the five mayors of the 4th District last week to discuss the establishment of nurseries for tree seedlings that will be given for free to the people.

At the same time, she called for the dredging of rivers to ensure the free flow of water to the sea during the rainy season.

The De Venecias have proposed the establishment of a ‘Refuge Center’ in every town, which will be situated in an area of higher elevation where victims can seek shelter during flooding and other calamities.

These centers will be used for livelihood training when there are no evacuation operations.—LM
