Region I transport groups hail LTO project

TRANSPORT organizations in Region 1 have endorsed the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) project, set to be implemented by the Land Transportation Office (LTO) in October, unless deferred by Malacañang or the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC).

Benny Aquino, president of the Association of United Transport Organization-Provincewide (Auto-Pro), representing 22 transport associations in Pangasinan, announced the group’s support to the RFID project after attending a regional dialogue on the project in San Fernando City called by DOTC Undersecretary Arturo Lomibao, chief of the LTO.

Aquino said various transport organizations in Pangasinan, La Union, Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte lauded RFID which they expect to eventually solve the problem of colorum vehicles that unfairly compete with the registered public utility vehicles.

“We endorsed RFID because we know it has good intentions and no bad intention whatsoever,” Aquino said upon his return from the dialogue.

The meeting was also attended by all district officers of LTO in the four provinces of the Ilocos Region.

He said if RFID is used as an instrument to violate human rights, as feared by groups opposing the project, they themselves would join the protest against it.

“But so far, we do not see it that way,” he said, adding that  “operators of legitimate public units will be the ones who will benefit.”—LM
