LINGAYEN– Whoever said living at age 100 is a wasted life, should eat his words.

At age 102, Genoveva Paragas, one of the oldest citizens in the province and the country, remains full of life.

Fondly called Bai Ebay who also earned the moniker ‘Super Lola’, Paragas remains healthy, continues to have a sharp memory, and still loves to sing the most popular Pangasinan love song Malinac Lay Labi to anyone who cares to listen.

Although dependent on a wheelchair for her mobility, Bai Ebay still has control of her internal organ functions, and is able to mix and drink her coffee without assistance.

While she complains of poor eyesight, her hearing faculty is still normal.  She is proud of the fact that she is able to recognize all grandchildren.

Her youngest daughter, Narcisa, 62, a retired master teacher, helps keep her memory sharp through daily mental numbers exercises and the story-telling about their family, recalling names of all members of the clan.

Born on June 3, 1907 in Barangay Naguelguel here, Bai Ebay is the eldest in a brood of four and the only survivor now.

Her children are all retired professionals: Estrellita, 77; Emerita, 66; presently based in the United States, and Narcisa, 62, were teachers; while Victorino, 73, and Agustin, 69, were both engineers.

The children organized a grand celebration on her centennial birthday, but her birthday celebration since she turned 90 has become an occasion for annual reunion for the family.

Bai Ebay continues with her simple and healthy lifestyle, sustained by a regular diet consisting of mostly fish and fruits. A piece of banana and coconut meat with broiled fish is her favorite.

“So you see, there is truth in the saying that coconut is life and banana a day keeps the doctor away,” Narcisa said. #
