Uncovered coal deliveries questioned

SUAL—The Mirant Sual Corporation reiterated its concern for clean environment when it sent a formal communication Friday to the National Power Corporation strongly urging that every delivery of coal to the Sual Coal-Fired Power Plant be covered.

This was also the request of members of the Sectoral Monitoring Team (SMT), a component of the Multi-Partite Monitoring team responsible for overseeing the environmental operations of   the Sual Coal-Fired Thermal Power Plant here.

They  made the move after being informed that LCT Big Ben of the Asian Shipping Lines, the barge carrying around 6,000 tons of call coming from Semirara, Antique, was found to be fully exposed while passing through the waters of  Sual.

The barge was inspected by Mario Laya, Melendre Balanon, Elena Bauzon and  Rose Gacad last January 23 upon learning of reports that the coal shipment to be delivered to the Sual Coal-Fired Power plant was not covered.

Upon confirmation of the incident and aware of the likelihood of coal spillage and fugitive dust, a report was already forwarded to the CENRO office in Alaminos City and to Mirant Corporation for immediate action.

The SMT convened in Sual Power Station last January 25 to thoroughly discuss the matter. On the same date, the Sual Police and Coast Guard inspected the barge anchored in Baybay Norte, Sual

Mirant strongly suggested to NPC that every delivery of coal be covered to prevent spillage and coal dust, lest the power plant may be constrained not to accept the delivery due to environmental complaints from the local community.

The SMT and  MMT are composed of representatives from the local government units, Non-Government Organizations, Department of Environment and Natural resources-Enviromental Management Bureau, and barangay council surrounding the stations.
