DAGUPAN CITY – The police’s buzz word on the illegal numbers and ameneng appears to “deny the presence until you die.”

Despite the official denial of the police of the existence of jueteng and ameneng in the city, many residents and barangay confirm their presence in the city.

Many of the known jueteng bet collectors who have inactive since the government declared an all-out campaign against it, are visibly seen making the rounds busy collecting bets in the city, while a number of ameneng machines reportedly continue to operate inside the bus terminal at the old Pantranco site.

Vice Mayor Alvin D.  Fernandez, who continued to express support for the anti-illegal gambling campaign in the city called on the police to stop merely paying lip service to the campaign and apply the full force of the law.

His sentiment was echoed by some members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod.

He said that while he is not personally aware of any jueteng operations in the city, the persistent reports of the existence of jueteng operations in the city affect the image of the city.

He reminded Supt. Edgar Basbas that he can be replaced by the “one-strike” if the PNP discovers a jueteng operation here.

For his part, he city police chief asked residents to promptly report presence of jueteng bet collectors in their barangays. – A.P.E.
