Barangay in Alcala bags Maisan award
ALCALA–Barangay San Vicente in this town won the ‘Maisan sa Barangay’ contest sponsored by the Abono partylist, bagging a prize of P2.2 million worth of projects for development.
The barangay was a runaway winner, garnering a score of 94 out of 100 for the high volume of production and the quality of their hybrid white corn planted in a one-fourth hectare lot at the backyard of Barangay Chairman Merla Cuaresma.
The barangay won in municipal, district and provincial levels.
San Vicente yielded 1,900 kilos for one-fourth hectare of lot, higher than the average harvest of six and a half to seven tons per hectare, explained Municipal Agriculturist EdgardoTugas.
Mayor Maneal Collado said what is particularly touching about the victory of San Vicente was the important contribution made by Cuaresma’s son, Jude, who at his sick bed due to bone cancer, researched on the internet techniques that the barangay adopted to improve their harvest.
Collado said Jude’s research work was complimented by an agriculture technician who helped the community ensure a good yield.
Jude passed away on the day the barangay’s victory was announced.
The mayor said San Vicente residents intend to spend their prize for the construction of two farm-to-market roads, a drainage system and a barangay health center.
Alcala is the number one producer of yellow corn, which is used as animal feed, in the 5th congressional district.
“Maisan sa Barangay“, a province-wide contest, was a joint project of ABONO Party List and the Provincial Government of Pangasinan in cooperation with the offices of Representatives Arthur Celeste (1st district), Mark Cojuangco (5th district), Conrado Estrella III (6th district) and Rep. Robert Raymund Estrella of Abono and the Department of Agriculture.
Abono provided the corn seeds plus three bags of fertilizer for every participating barangay while the provincial government gave discount coupons. The municipal government of Alcala also provided a counterpart discount coupon. #
