Tension runs high after assassination attempt
TAYUG–Tension runs high again in this town, even with the election still nine months away, after a member of the Zaragoza clan was shot and wounded in front of a school in Barangay Amistad before noon on Thursday.
Shot and wounded was Herbie Zaragoza, 28, son of Leonel Zaragoza, a former barangay chairman and councilor, a nephew of the town’s late Mayor Guerrero Zaragoza who was assassinated in mid 2000.
The younger Zaragoza, single, is a nephew of incumbent Vice Mayor Janet Zaragoza, who is expected to challenge Mayor Carlos Trese Mapili in next year’s election.
The incident is seen to spark new tension in Tayug between the followers of the town mayor and vice mayor who already figured in a clash last year.
The victim sustained one gunshot wound each in the stomach, left thigh and left leg fired by one of two men on board a motorcycle, using a Caliber .45 pistol as evidenced by five empty shells found at the crime scene, said Chief Inspector Abraham Hambon, chief of police.
Herbie was treated at the Family Hospital in Tayug and is now out of danger.
The perpetrators fled towards the town of San Nicolas after a brief chase by SPO3 Marlon Espero on board his own motorcycle failed —LM
