THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) provincial office has included in its new roster 90,440 new voters for the 2010 election, adding to the 1.5 million registered voters in the province.

Lawyer Reddy Balarbar, the provincial election supervisor, said the turnout of new voters can be considered high compared to other provinces but still far behind the target of 200,000 new voters, mainly first time youth voters.

Balarbar ascribed the upsurge of new registrants to the people’s  “last minute habit”.

The deadline for registration is October 31.

Balarbar, however, told the PUNCH he’d be happy to register 150,000 new voters by October.

The top six municipalities in the province with highest number of new registrants are Villasis (2,913), Binmaley (2,785), Dagupan City (2,534), Mangaldan (2,227), Binalonan (2,258) and Mangatarem (2,202).

Balarbar said the Comelec team has been working doubly hard, even extending their working days to the weekend for the processing of registration and the revalidation of voters.

Pangasinan is the fifth province with the highest number of electorate nationwide.#
