MANGALDAN–The Land Transportation Office (LTO) is looking at an additional income of P1 billion from vehicles that have expired registrations and are due for renewal.

Assistant Secretary Arturo Lomibao, head of the LTO, told local newsmen the agency is tracing the whereabouts of 1.3 million motor vehicles nationwide whose registrations have expired at the same time it is looking into a possible amnesty program to encourage owners to renew their registration.

Lomibao said motorcycles have the most number of un-renewed licenses whose owners often cite financial constraints for their failure to register annually.

The LTO chief was in town last week to oversee the delivery of the E-Patrol project, a mobile LTO office that can process applications for new and renewal of licenses for motor vehicles and drivers.

He added that tracing these motor vehicles will also help purge the list of vehicles that have already been deemed to be not road worthy through the required smoke emission test during the renewal of registration.

Meanwhile Lomibao lamented the continued lax implementation of the law requiring motorcycle riders to wear helmets all over the country.

He said considering the number of violators per day, about a million pesos more can be collected from penalties.#
