The ‘Enchanted Kingdom’ is here

Millions of parents in the country can only sympathize with the dedicated Department of Education officials who got bawled out for trying to get more support for their endeavors by being candid and truthful about the woeful situation of education in the country today.

More than the teachers who appear helpless about the government’s situation, parents suffer the brunt of the government’s negligence. It is bad enough that poverty that has long stared in their faces has already taken its toll on their children’s education but to be told squarely in their faces that there are no problems confronting their children’s education is the ultimate insult to whatever remains of their dignity as Filipinos.

In Pangasinan, the situation cannot be far different from those obtaining everywhere else. There is clearly a shortage of classrooms, books, equipment and supplies. But more damning is the critical lack of retraining and refresher courses for our teachers. With these, one can surmise how our school district offices fare in passing and accomplishment rates in the months ahead.

Until the true state of affairs of the nation are known, the proper and adequate solutions cannot be defined. To date, solutions offered have been nothing but a series of lies and cover-up, and the most recent of which was the not-too-creative approach applied by the town-criers of Sigaw ng Bayan. They promise people that the quality of education of the populace will greatly improve once the shift from the presidential system to the parliament is completed. What hogwash.

The recent attempt of Mrs. Gloria Arroyo alone to pull the wool over our parents’ eyes on the worsening problem of the public education sector is the classic argument to the proposition that it is the leaders that make the government, not the system.

If only the parents could be heard, they are now wont to tell Malacañang occupants – “Welcome to Enchanted Kingdom! the land of make-believe.”
