City fetes local partners in nutrition
Mayor Alipio Fernandez Jr. commended the efforts of various non-government organizations and institutions in the city to support the nutrition program of the city in simple ceremonies at the City Plaza last July 6.
Fernandez said the people of Dagupan will treasure its partnerships with JCI Dagupan Inc., Inner Wheel Club of Dagupan, Rotary Club of Uptown Dagupan, ABS-CBN Bantay Bata Foundation and the CSI Group of Companies for sharing the cause and commitment for better nutrition.
“Civic engagements have never been so high in our city nutrition program. Improvements in our children’s health have gone so far because many foods have been brought to the table. Many people have done so much to keep our children healthy,” Fernandez said.
Last year, several civic groups and non-government organizations launched separate 120-day full supplementary feeding programs in Sitio Calima in Pantal, Bonuan Gueset and Sitio Caricaan in Pogo Chico.
City nutrition officer Leah Aquino said Dagupan’s young children are healthier today than they were five years ago citing the reduction in the over-all malnutrition rate among children below 6 years old, from a high of 10% in 2006 to a low of 8.4% in 2008.
She said the school-based feeding program yielded more promising results as malnutrition rate nosedived from 21.5% to 11% in 2008.
