Ex-dad Sta. Maria laid to rest

FORMER Dagupan City Councilor Alfredo D. Sta. Maria, Sr., who died of heart attack last May 17, was laid to rest Saturday at Eternal Gardens. He was 74.

Before his interment, a necrological rite was held in his honor at the Senior Citizens Park at City Plaza where close friends and former allies and buddies took eulogizing him for his great contributions to the city as the longest-serving member of the city council.

His friends called him “Manok” for being a raiser of fighting cocks as well as being an aficionado and on account of his great staying power in politics.

A medical practitioner and civic leader, Sta. Maria first became a city councilor in 1970. One of his contemporaries in that election was Immigration Commissioner Alipio Fernandez, Jr.

Sta. Maria held on to the position as city councilor up to 1986 until he and other officials of the city were replaced by OICs. But he was elected anew 1988 and stayed on till 1998.

At past 70, Dr. Sta. Maria attempted to stage a come-back in the 2004 election but failed.

He is survived by his wife Eva and children Adolf, Agerico, Aguedo, Ruby, Mary Eva, Asterio, Angelica, Myla and Vicente II, and grandchildren.
