New cop chief washes hands on rustling
SAN CARLOS CITY – The newly appointed chief of police here is under fire for the upsurge of cattle rustling but he refuses to take blame for it, at least not yet.
Supt. Johnny Bacbac, chief of police, said the problem has been long been the bane of the city even before he assumed his post and therefore said it’s unfair to blame him just within weeks of his appointment.
He became the object of the farmer’s ire because the latter felt that a cattle rustling was contained during his predecessors’ time.
Bacbac vowed to move against the cattle rustlers as barangay officials supported his recommendation to cattle owners to brand or put a mark on the animals to make recovery of these possible.
He had pointed out that without means of identifying the animals; the stolen cattle can easily be sold or passed off without raising any suspicion from potential buyers.
The barangay officials had started to campaign for massive branding of animals in their areas.
Branding of animals was first undertaken in barangays Bacnar, Turac and Balete Sur, where marks, using burning iron, were put on the body of the animal.
The branding of animals in barangays Balete Norte as well as Malacañang will be completed soon.
Bacbac said that marks on the cattle will make it easier for police to trace animals declared as missing.
He also suggested to the residents to invest in cell phones so they can immediately alert the police and pursuit operations can be launched immediately.
Bacbac also called on members of Civilian Volunteers Organizations and Non-Government Organizations to help in the campaign against cattle rustling.
The new police chief said he has also worked out nightly patrol activities in the barangays. – A.P.E.
