Annual earthquake drills held in Dagupan

SIMULTANEOUS earthquake drills were facilitated by the Dagupan City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) in 39 public schools and 11 private schools in the city last July 16 in observance of the 1990 earthquake that struck northern and central Luzon.

An evaluation forum was later held at West Central Elementary School with representative from the schools, Local Government Units (LGUs) and non-government organizations (NGOs) to assess the activity.

Based on the evaluation made, City Agriculture Emma Molina said students in the first district basically knew what to do in case of an earthquake while other areas are still lacking in equipment, and special training for medical response needs to be conducted.

Mayor Benjamin S. Lim recommended that the drill be repeated until the students have fully internalized the possible situation that can happen if an actual earthquake occurs.

The 1990 earthquake was one of the most devastating natural disasters in the country, leaving 1,666 casualties and extensive damage. (CIO)
