Sick pigs from CL found in local market
MALASIQUI – A move to bring in animals suffering from a disease into Pangasinan from Central Luzon was thwarted this week by the police here with the aid of the town’s veterinary officer.
These were 20 piglets loaded in a passenger jeepney bound to the livestock market here from Angeles City in Pampanga, which may have not been detected by checkpoints located in various entrances to the province from central Luzon.
These checkpoints were set up earlier by the provincial government and the Bureau of Animal Industry to prevent the entry of animals afflicted with the dreaded foot and mouth disease (FMD).
The piglets were confiscated by the police after they were confirmed by the veterinary officer that these were afflicted with chronic pneumonia which is a contagious disease of livestock.
Intercepted by the police was a passenger jeepney with plate number DCH – 460 driven by one Pedro dela Cruz, 49, of Barangay Cayanga, Angeles City. On board the vehicle were Roberto Aquino, Randy Laxama and Hector Valerio, also of Angeles City.
All were brought to the PNP headquarters for investigation and were only released after they paid their fine to the town treasurer and after they were admonished not to bring again diseased piglets here.
They were warned too that they will be slapped with much heavier penalties, plus imprisonment, if they will come back and commit the same violation.
The PNP responded to the order of the Municipal Veterinarian to check all livestock entering the livestock market for sale to ensure that they are free from any illness especially the chronic pneumonia. – A.P.E.
