AKG sets up base in Dagupan City
THE newly-created Anti-Kidnapping Group (AKG) of the Philippine National Police is setting up a satellite office in Dagupan to handle kidnapping incidents in Pangasinan and nearby provinces.
Mayor Benjamin S. Lim and Police Senior Supt. Isagani R. Nerez, a lawyer and PNP-AKG director, recently signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) allowing the PNP-AKG to use the old headquarters of the Dagupan City PNP located at Perez Boulevard.
The AKG has replaced the Police Anti-Crime Emergency Response (PACER), which was deactivated by the National Police Commission (Napolcom).
Nerez said that the AKG would be the primary unit of the PNP in handling all kidnapping and hostage negotiation cases in the country.
“The AKG will be operating in Pangasinan and nearby provinces in close collaboration with the Police Regional Office I, Pangasinan Police Provincial Office and the Dagupan City Police Station,” said Nerez.
Lim welcomed the PNP-AKG saying” it is significant that the city was chosen to be the home of AKG.”
Nerez warned the public that kidnappers usually act on information given by the target victim’s house help, security guards or even close friends.
He advised the public to be always on alert, maintain good relations with neighbors, and to always travel on lighted areas in the company of another.
“Never display your wealth and never commit any (ransom) money to the kidnappers,” said Nerez.
Unlike the PACER, AKG is now a national support unit of the PNP and it is more stable because it enjoys fiscal autonomy.
“Now that we have a unit, puede nang mag-build up ng intelligence in order to neutralize the kidnappers,” he said.
PNP-AKG Luzon will be under the leadership of Police Supt. Amando Lagiwid. (CIO/JCB)
