Carrera wins Asingan bikefest
WHAT he learned from his overseas stint, he uses it here in the national scene.
And with strong determination, aggressiveness, luck and mixed with imperious versatility of racing, the formula is paying off 2006 Tour de Langkawi veteran Sherwin Carrera.
Carrera displayed his maturity and supremacy in road racing by conquering the much ballyhoed “13th Engr. Fidel D. Ginez Cycling Classic” last Sunday in a convincing fashion participated in by top guns in Philippine cycling.
Carrera, a lanky five-foot-eleven ace from San Fabian town, crossed the finish line all by his lonesome, after successfully leaving his breakaway partner and townmate Rene Esteban at the race’s halfway mark to pocket the P12,000 top prize.
He also received an additional P2,500 for dominating all five summit sprints along the national highways of all the sixth district towns of Pangasinan.
The youthful Carrera, 21, negotiated the 178 -kilometer flat trek that started and ended in Asingan town in four hours, 34 minutes and 27 seconds.
Host cyclist Baler Ravina was the luckiest of the eight-man second group, three minutes 54 seconds behind, bagging P8,000 for finishing second. Nuevo Ecijano and defending champion Albert Primero landed third worth P5,000.
Rounding up the top ten are: Ariel Flores (Mangaldan) 4th, P3,000; Reynaldo Navarro (San Jacinto) 5th, P2,000; Danny Ganigan (Binalonan) 6th, P1,000; Joel Calderon(Guimba, N.E.) 7th, P900; Merculio Ramos, Jr. (Tarlac City) 8th, P800; Edgardo Bollezer (San Manuel, Pang.) 9th, P700; Jesus Garcia (Sta. Maria, Pang.) 10th, P600.
All survivors and non-survivors were also awarded P300 apiece.
All prizes, trophies and medals were awarded by the sponsoring Ginez family led by DPWH Region 1 Director Fidel D.Ginez and his wife Editha.
“This is one of my contributions to the province for the development of our athletes especially our local cyclists. Rest assured we will stage another one next year and it will be held again on the last week of April because it is a good tune up race for the cyclists who will participate in the annual Tour,” said Dir. Ginez after the awarding ceremonies. — JAG
