R1MC set to do kidney transplants
THE Region 1 Medical Center (R1MC) in Dagupan is now offering kidney transplant service, but initially in partnership with the National Kidney Transplant Institute (NKTI) where the operation will be performed.
Dr. Joseph Mejia, chief of R1MC, announced that a number of R1MC patients have been given new kidneys through collaboration with NKTI’s experts.
The removal of kidneys from donors were done solely by R1MC doctors.
Mejia said the partnership with NKTI is a temporary arrangement because R1MC currently has only one set of kidney transplant instruments and kidney transplant protocol requires at least two sets.
Mejia announced that the kidney removal from a donor and its transplant to the beneficiary will soon be both done at R1MC as the lacking transplant instrument unit is expected to arrive in two months.
R1MC doctors had been trained to perform kidney transplant by NKTI, which Health Secretary Enrique Ona used to head.
Mejia confirmed that R1MC, the only tertiary level 4 hospital in Pangasinan, was earlier accredited by the DOH and NKTI as the kidney transplant center of the north.
Aside from being a kidney center, R1MC was also designated by DOH as the heart and lung center of the north.
