SP to pass resolution for celebration of Independence Day
LINGAYEN—The Sangguniang Panlalawigan is set to pass a resolution calling for the formal celebration of Philippine Independence Day every June 12 of the year at the provincial level.
This developed as 6th District Board Member Ranjit R. Shahani expressed disappointment over the absence of a formal celebration by the provincial government during the recent Independence Day commemoration last June 12.
“I want to pass a resolution requesting the province to automatically recognize and celebrate Independence Day here at the Capitol and make it a regular celebration in the province of Pangasinan,” Shahani said.
In his privilege speech during the last SP session on June 18, Shahani raised his sentiment over the failure of the province to celebrate the Philippines’ liberation from foreign rule thereby acquiring freedom and sovereignty from all colonizers and invaders.
Sharing the sentiment of BM Shahani, BM Alfie Bince, also of the 6th District, said “we should really hold as part of our celebration of national holidays the celebration of Independence Day in Pangasinan.”
Bince stressed that “the celebration of Independence Day is not only the formal raising of the flag but more importantly the exercise of democratic and free choice of our leaders.”
Although the provincial officials took part in the Independence Day celebration in their local municipalities and graced the flag raising ceremonies and wreath-laying activities, there was no commemoration made at the provincial Capitol.
Bince noted that Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr. was on an official trip from June 9 to July 1 to the United States, particularly to represent the province of Pangasinan in the Independence Day celebration at Seattle, Washington and in other states upon invitation of Pangasinense associations.
BM Mojamito Libunao joined Shahani and Bince in pushing for the passage of the resolution.
BM Von Mark Mendoza of the 2nd District, on the other hand, proposed to harness the Pangasinan Cultural Heritage Council, earlier created by the SP, to look into activities related to history and culture.
Mendoza, who also supported Shahani’s proposal, said he believes that Pangasinan played a very significant role in gaining independence for the Republic of the Philippines. (PIO/Angeline D. Villanueva)
