R1MC: No hospital waste in Dagupan’s dumpsite

AMID THE furor over opening of new dumpsites in the city, the Region 1 Medical Center (R1MC) has belied claims made by certain quarters that the government-owned hospital is dumping its toxic wastes at the Dagupan City’s open dumpsite in Barangay Bonuan Boquig.

Dr. Roland Mejia, R1MC director, said the hospital strictly disposes biological wastes inside a vault installed at the R1MC compound in Barangay Bonuan Binloc, which is under the close and constant supervision of the Department of Health.

“The biological wastes of the medical center, like blood and others, are being carefully and systematically handled,” Mejia said in response to allegations that the hospital is aggravating the worsening waste disposal problem in the city.

Tinitiyak kong wala itong inaapektuhang kahit isang mamamayan sa lungsod”, he stressed, adding that a special waste management crew is handling this.

As for the hospital’s other wastes, Mejia said R1MC utilizes an efficient private company that hauls R1MC’s waste materials and bring these straight to a designated dumping site located outside the jurisdiction of Dagupan City.

“R1MC is totally aware of environmental concerns and as an institution, it knows the hazards that can be brought about by wrongly disposed waste materials,” the doctor said.

“If there is indiscriminate throwing of medically-related garbage in the dumpsite, definitely such garbage does not come from us at R1MC,” he added.
