Dagupan City SK hoopfest starts June 16
DAGUPAN’S youth basketball players are expected to dish out their best starting June 16 in an inter-barangay basketball tournament for players 15 to 21 years old at the Dagupan People’s Astrodome.
Organized by the city’s Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) president Chester Gonzales and Liga ng Mga Barangay head Guillermo “Emong” Vallejos, the hoopfest will be dubbed this year as “2012 Mayor Benjie S. Lim Cup”.
Last year’s champion, Barangay Bonuan Gueset, is again fielding in a team.
Tournament Commissioner Alejandro Cansino said 21 of the city’s 31 barangays have already registered. At least 25 barangays are expected to join the games, which will be bracketed into three groups.
Cansino, head of the National Basketball Referees Organization Pangasinan chapter, said all participating teams will join the parade on June 16 at the assembly point, the Dagupan City museum, at 7:00 a.m. before proceeding to the games venue for the opening ceremony at 9:00 a.m.
“New FIBA rules will be strictly implemented purposely to educate our young village players which I believe most of whom are not yet aware of, the latest international set of laws in this sport,” said Cansino.
“The competition will hone the skills of these young players in preparation for the provincewide inter-town and cities basketball tournament, which I believe will be staged this year,” he added.–JAG, Jr.
