Weather forecast more accurate now, says DOST
RAIN or shine?
Prediction of weather in the province is now more accurate as data can now be localized through two weather stations installed in the province, according to the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).
Engr. Felipe D. Andrada, director of the DOST-Pangasinan Science and Technology Center, said the agency installed last year an automatic rain gauge station at the Pangasinan State University campus in Sta. Maria town and an automatic weather station at the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) in Dagupan.
Andrada explained that localized collection and monitoring of data is more accurate than distant monitoring being done by radars since the scope of radars can be limited by overcast sky or hindered by mountains along their lines of sight, leading to false readings.
“We can predict the weather more accurately now. Unlike before, when storms cannot even be predicted although they are already near,” he said during the KBP Forum at the Philippine Information Agency office on Thursday.
Additional weather stations are being planned to be installed this year, he added.
The station in Dagupan is capable of monitoring rainfall, relative humidity, wind velocity and temperature, he said.
Forecasts and weather data can be accessed at http://202.90.128.12/predict/stations.php.
Meanwhile, the DOST and the Philippine Volcanology and Seismology have installed four seismic stations in the province to monitor earthquakes.
The stations are located in the towns of Lingayen, Bolinao, San Manuel (near San Roque Dam) and Urdaneta City. (PIA-Pangasinan/RRF)
