ROSALES—More jobseekers now prefer local placements instead of higher paying overseas jobs.

This trend was not lost to DOLE Regional Director Grace Y. Ursua who said most applicants who came to the jobs fair led by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Region 1 at the SM City Rosales last May 1, the observance of Labor Day, were seeking local placements because these would mean immediate employment.

A total of 11,005 local and overseas jobs were offered at the jobs fair.

Local jobs numbered 3,908. Overseas employment opportunities were available in Taiwan, Brunei, Cyprus, Malaysia, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore and several Middle East countries accounted for 7,097.

The jobs offered by 16 overseas employers and 50 local firms included factory work, food service, domestic help, sales, beauty salon, medical and construction, teaching, computer and electronics, and hotel staff.

Pangasinenses made up the majority of the applicants, other applicants came from Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte and La Union.

MISMATCH

Urusa also said the issues of jobs mismatch is already being addressed by the DOLE through information dissemination campaign and on-line registration.

Rosales town Mayor Ricardo V. Revita, added, “it is not only employment that we seek for our people, jobs must also be dignified.”

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) led by Regional Director Florante Leal also introduced the “Diskuwento Caravan” in the same venue.
