FOR siblings JP and Ian Foronda, 15 and 10, respectively, beating the summer heat is just a short tricycle ride away.

Residents of Barangay Angio, an inland part of San Fabian, the two, together with their legal guardian Lucrecia Cordero, often go to the beaches in Barangay Nibaliw Vidal of their hometown during their summer break from school.

San Fabian, the northernmost town on the western coast of Pangasinan, is about five hours away from Metro Manila, and about 75 kilometers from Baguio City.

Known for its beaches with fine, dark sand, San Fabian records its most number of tourists during the months of April and May as the town also celebrates “Pista’y Dayat” every May 1 alongside the province-wide celebration of the Sea Festival.

Day huts are available at the beaches as well as cottages for longer stays. Some resorts and shops offer banana boat riding, jetski and other aqua-sports facilities. Motorized bancas can also be rented for a ride along parts of the Lingayen Gulf.

Aside from Barangay Nibaliw Vidal, there are also resorts in Barangays Sobol, Bolasi, Mabilao, and Rabon, all located north of the town center.

PASALUBONG

And what trip would be complete without a pasalubong?

San Fabian’s Pasalubong Center, operated by the Pangasinan Council of Women Inc. (PCWI) and the local government unit, carries processed bangus products made by PCWI members. Their bangus sardines was awarded on its first year of production as the best OTOP (One Town OneProduct) in Pangasinan and in Region 1.

Native cakes, pastries and other goodies are also available.

Just behind the Pasalubong Center is the 300-year old St. Fabian Parish Church which is worth a visit for it has been a witness to the town’s history, culture and traditions.

Aside from its beaches, a ride around San Fabian will take visitors to agricultural areas where tobacco, rice, corn and vegetables are grown.
