THE annual Bangus Festival, considered as one of the major festivities in the country, officially opened last Friday with the Bangus Ed Carosa Float Parade and a grand opening ceremony capped by a fireworks display.

The float parade, a procession of colorful Bangus-inspired floats, traversed Dagupan’s major thoroughfares.

A parade of bancas was also held before Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas blessed the river and the ceremonial dispersal of fingerlings.

The Art Walk and Sculpture was also unveiled along with the opening of a trade fair featuring Pangasinan’s best products.

Meanwhile, two of the festival’s events, Little Miss Dagupan and Bangus King and Queen Festival 2012, were launched earlier at SM Rosales on April 9.

Sixteen girls, aged four to nine, are competing for the title Little Miss Dagupan.

In the Bangus King and Queen competition, out of the 11 young ladies and 22 men that made it to the preliminary screening at SM, nine female and 12 male candidates were chosen for the final awarding during the Bikini Open on April 20 at the City Plaza.

MINI-KALUTAN

Councilor Brian Lim, chairman of this year’s Bangus Festival celebration, led the ceremonial lighting of the 30-meter mini Kalutan Ed Dalan in front of SM Rosales on April 10.

“Being part of the prestigious event has not only enabled us (SM) to showcase the Bangus Festival, but more importantly, customers get a first-hand experience of the actual festival,” said SM Rosales Store Manager Jersey Mendoza.

Grilled bangus were later shared with the crowd as the Avant Garde Drum and Bugle Corps of Calasiao provided festive music.

The annual Bangus Festival will be on until end of April with other events lined up: Bangus Rodeo, Pigar-pigar festival, sporting competitions, and the grand kalutan on the last day. (with report from CIO).
